Remember Toyota‘s FT-1 Concept? Apparently, a production model based on this concept will be released in the near future and that is the 2018 Toyota Supra. The new Supra will be designed by Toyota with the help of BMW. It will be quite similar to the BMW Z4. Keep reading for the latest rumors and details.

2018 Toyota Supra Design Based on FT-1 Concept

Like we already said, the 2018 Toyota Supra will be built by both BMW and Toyota, so it is not a surprise that it will share its platform with the latest BMW Z4 model. BMW will observe and direct the execution of production of both Supra and Z4, which will supposedly appear within one or two years. years. Supra will also borrow some design elements from the FT-1 Concept, that made its debut in 2014. Below you can see the Graphite variant of the concept model.

We also have some rendering photos that give us the idea how the 2018 Toyota Supra may look like. As you can see below, it does bear resemblance to the FT-1, it shares many styling features with the concept model. However, according to our sources, the production model won’t be having a Formula 1-inspired front end. The large air intakes will remain on the front, though.

The two automakers will be using a hybrid steel, aluminium and carbon-reinforced plastic materials for production of the upcoming Supra and Z4 models, in order to make them lighter, which will have a good impact on performance and handling, and to improve fuel economy.

What About Engine And Its Specs?

The new Toyota Supra 2018 will be using the same engine as the new BMW Z4 roadster, and that is a 2.0-liter I-4 TDI engine. It will also use the same dual-clutch transmission transferring the power to the rear wheels. The car will also use Toyota’s own plug-in hybrid technology, adding two electric motors at the front and one motor at the rear to unlock AWD traction, producing about additional 350 horsepower to the whole system.

When Can We Expect It To Be Released?

It is almost the end of the year, so we are not sure if the 2018 Toyota Supra could be released by the end of 2017, or even early 2018. The most probable case scenario is that the new Supra will be released in the second half of 2018, but in that case it could also be released as a 2019 model year model.

According to our source at Digital Trends, the 2018 Toyota Supra will cost more than the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, which carries a base price of 55 thousand dollars before a mandatory destination fees.
